The best time to plan your travel is right now

Has this been your experience?  You are nearing the end of the year and realize that you haven't used all of your PTO and you cannot carry it all over to the next year.

This is not the ideal situation.  To avoid that kind of issue, I recommend taking the time now to look at your calendar and plan out your vacations.

Here are some simple steps you can take now to avoid disappointment later:

1. Look at how much time you will accrue over the year ahead. Or how much time you want to take off if you are an entrepreneur.

2. Consider whether there are any special events or holidays you would like to celebrate with family or friends in the next year.

3. Plan whether those will be weekends or full-length trips.

4. Request time off. Or make the selection in your calendar and block it off as Out of Office.

5. Have the time off approved. This avoids the situation I was seeing in reels a couple of years ago about people working remotely and scheduling trips thinking they'd be able to work from wherever and then needing to go into the office.  Avoid stress and potentially losing your job by planning ahead!

6. Once the time off is approved. Plan your travel.  This avoids you putting deposits on trips and then finding out you need to cancel or reschedule.  It reduces your stress and issues.  If you want some flexibility with dates, add a couple of days before or after so you can leave on the days of your choice.  It still gives you a framework but allows for some flexibility in scheduling and cost.  As we all know, some days might be less expensive for flights, but if your dates aren't flexible, they are what they are.

7. Contact your travel advisor (me).  Nobody really wants to spend that much time planning their own vacation.  Who wouldn't want to have a personal advisor to discuss their travel preferences with and then have them work with their trusted travel providers to come up with the ideal travel solution for them?

8. Reach out on National Plan for Vacation Day!  But really, any time is the right time to plan your next travel adventure!  [email protected]
